About KMS Watercolor

Hi, I’m Katelyn! ♡

I’m the artist and maker behind KMS Watercolor. I’m from Knoxville, Tennessee, and I started KMS Watercolor when I was just 13 years old!

What started as a few handmade colors made for my own artwork quickly turned into something much bigger than I ever could have imagined.

How KMS Watercolor Started

Before KMS Watercolor existed, I was already creating art and running a small lettering business called Katelyn Marie Lettering. I spent a lot of time experimenting with watercolor and fell completely in love with it.

One day, I was working on a project and couldn’t find the exact color I wanted. That’s when I discovered handmade watercolor paints and became fascinated by the idea that artists could actually make their own paints.

After collecting quite a few handmade paints from other makers, I eventually decided to try making my own.

I made a few colors, used them in my artwork and lettering videos, and shared them on Instagram. Before long, people started asking me what colors I was using and, more importantly, where they could buy them.

So in May 2018, I took the leap and started selling my handmade watercolor paints.

Within just a few weeks, I was making hundreds of paints at a time and selling out in under an hour during restocks. It quickly became clear that the watercolor side of my business was becoming something of its own.

On July 22, 2018, KMS Watercolor officially became its own brand.

At the time, I was still making everything myself while balancing school and being a teenager. I eventually transitioned from liquid watercolor to exclusively creating handmade pan watercolors, and the collection continued to grow.

In April 2019, KMS Watercolor officially moved off of Etsy and onto our own website, which is the very same website you’re on today! This gave KMS Watercolor a home of its own and allowed us to continue growing the brand beyond what we could do on Etsy.

Where We Are Today

What started with a few colors has grown into a collection of 500+ handmade watercolor paints and a community of artists who continue to inspire me every day.

Every color is still created with the same love of color and creativity that started this whole thing years ago. From developing new shades to putting together collections and packing orders, KMS Watercolor is still a very hands-on, personal business.

And while the brand has grown a LOT since I was 13, one thing hasn’t changed: I still get ridiculously excited about making pretty colors.

A Little More About Me

KMS Watercolor is one of the biggest parts of my journey as an entrepreneur, and it has grown right alongside me. I started creating and selling art when I was just 12 years old, and by the time KMS Watercolor officially became its own brand, I was 13.

Since then, I’ve gone on to create several other creative projects and businesses, but KMS Watercolor will always hold a very special place in my story. It has given me the opportunity to turn my love for art and color into something that artists all over the world can enjoy.
